Before Christmas, we made and fitted some floating shelves into a beautiful Arts and Crafts house owned by one of our clients. They’re called floating shelves as there is no sign of any fixings or brackets, so the shelves look like they are actually, well, ‘floating’ somehow.
We made the solid shelves from super prime European oak. Our client asked if we could tie them into the rest of the style of the room, and a specific detail on the windows in particular. You can just see this detail at the bottom of the centre window frame in the last photo above. So, we copied the detail and hand carved it onto the front edge of each shelf, and you can see this distinctive Arts and Crafts detail on the shelves above. We then also stained and lacquered to match the existing window frames in the room.
Finally (and we’ll let you into a little secret), we fitted the shelves to the wall using large studding bars that are concealed within the shelves and then resin bonded into wall. So, the shelves are not only beautiful, they’re also very strong.
