Kitchen screen and shelving in oak

furniture maker Buckinghamshire furniture maker Buckinghamshire

Before Christmas, we designed, made and fitted this tall screen into the kitchen of an architect-designed house. We often work for architects who require one-off, made-to-measure, special, or simply unusual pieces of furniture that need to be designed and made from scratch. This screen not only provides some privacy form the outside looking in, but also functions as very useful shelving.

We constructed the screen to measure in MDF with super prime, European Oak veneer and solid oak lippings.
We fitted pieces of 6mm low iron glass polished all around and toughened to sit in grooves in each third of the screen (see first photo to see the glass better.) The uprights of the screen, lower shelf and tops were constructed with 2 pieces of 19mm oak-veneered MDF to make 38mm thickness. We made the shelves 26mm Oak veneered MDF, and the screen was built with a biscuited and carcass screwed construction, made up in three sections that bolt together with flush sitting chromed hex bolts.
The whole screen sits on fixed height nylon glide, with locating pins in sides that fix the cabinet in place, to prevent toppling. Finally, the whole screen has been treated to a hard-wearing clear lacquered finish.
