Floating shelves for a beautiful Arts and Crafts house

We have recently finished fitting some simple and elegant floating shelves for a client. They live in a wonderful Arts and Crafts house in the Gerrads Cross area, and needed some subtle shelving that didn’t take away from the fine details of the room in which the shelves were needed. The original period plaster work coving and ceiling work in this room really is superb, as is the curved and leaded bay window.

The whole point of floating shelves is that, as the name suggests, they look like they have no visible means of support and are just ‘floating’ against the wall. No brackets, no screws, no messy bits sticking out.

We constructed these shelves in maple and moisture-resistant MDF. We were able to exactly match the paint colour of the shelves by spectro-analysing the wall. This technique scans the paint pigments to produce an exact replica of a certain paint shade, and is an amazingly useful modern technique that can help us often nowadays.
