We’ve just finished making this bespoke desk and storage unit in oak for some clients, and it couldn’t be more different to the bespoke and fitted ultra-contemporary kitchen we completed just before Christmas.
Our clients live in old thatched house, so wanted the unit to blend in with and respect the old character of the rest of the house’s interior. We’ve made it in oak, and used ‘character’ oak – that is, retaining the natural knots, blemishes and marks that Mother Nature herself put into the timber. We have also used random width boards on the doors, because in times gone by, not everything was laser-cut to perfection by machines – a man and a hand saw did the job just as well!
We’ve included a clever little drawer for a computer keyboard that when not in use is hidden away, and the computer itself will be fitted in a ventilated cupboard, just left of the knee space. All cables will be managed and concealed. The storage cupboard to the right features an adjustable shelf and drawer above, and all the doors are braced and ledged construction. The bookcase above the desk space has four adjustable shelves, two each side of the cabinet, and all the drawers run on top quality soft close drawer runners. All the door hinges and knobs are hand forged iron work, and we think look fantastic in place.
This unit will now be dismantled to be taken off to have a traditional oiled finish applied, and this will really bring up the beautiful grain and texture of the oak. Once done, we shall transport it (very carefully!) to the clients’ house, and then fit it in place, to perfection, and of course to our clients’ satisfaction.
