Sometimes our homes can present difficult spaces, where standard mass-produced furniture just can’t maximise the potential look or function of the space. Here at Mark Williamson Furniture, our experience can help you to turn challenging spaces into beautiful storage solutions.

We recently completed work for a client who wanted to maximise the use of three spaces in their home. The first was an area under the stairs in a hallway; a high traffic area, the storage solution we designed coupled coat storage, low level cupboards and a tall bookcase with integrated lighting.

Under stairs storage solution

Functional hallway storage combining coat hanging space, low level cupboards and tall bookcase.

The framework for this piece was constructed in solid Oak with the cabinetry consisting of Oak veneered high quality furniture grade MDF with solid Oak edging. The bookcase was fitted with six adjustable shelves and finished with simple detailing to the ceiling.

The elegant bookcase included integrated lighting

Soft close hinges, concealed in the construction of the doors provided a clean and simple look.

Sloping ceilings can also create difficult spaces, where it’s hard to know how to make best use of the area. Together with the client, we designed an open shelving unit which we carefully scribed to match the ceiling contours for a refined finish.

Finally, a narrow recess in a spare room lent itself to a custom made floor to ceiling shelving unit with double doors to provide a streamlined look.

The handles, integrated into the structure of the doors run the full length of the unit and add to the modern and sleek appearance.

As with each of the pieces this unit featured integrated lighting and we also ensured that the plug sockets remained accessible, with cable management considered in the shelving configuration.

From tree to table – transforming French oak into bespoke furniture

At Mark Williamson Furniture it’s very important to us where our raw materials come from, we take every care to ensure the wood for your furniture is sustainably sourced and certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

It takes plenty of skill and experience to shape wood from its raw form into finished furniture, however what’s often not realised is that it can also take some heavy lifting. We recently took a large delivery of French oak for a regular client. Destined to be crafted into dining tables, benches, desks and coffee tables, the oak first needed to be manoeuvred into the workshop and cut to size.

In this recent hot weather it was particularly hard work, with each piece of oak varying in length from 4.2metres to 5.2metres and weighing in the region of 100 kilos.

Once into the workshop, we began to craft the wood into bespoke furniture. It has such beauty in its raw state that one of our main aims was to bring out the patterns of the grain, the knots and different tones in the wood.

Book matching is a process that involves cutting the wood along the length of the tree and then opening it up like a book, so that the grain is mirrored on each side. Below you can see where this has been done, and the fantastic way in which this technique shows off the grain of the wood.

These particular pieces of book matched wood were finished into a large dining table, complete with oak frame and legs, perfect for large family gatherings.

A few weeks back we posted up some photos of fitted bedroom furniture that we were in the process of working on in our workshop.  They are for a client in Wescott and we have now fitted them into our clients’ home as in the photos above. We designed and made a fully fitted wardrobe, a free-standing chest of drawers, and a pair of night stands with dressing table. The framework we made in solid maple for strength and durability, and the drawers were constructed in a combination of oak veneered furniture grade MDF and solid oak, finished off with a natural oiled finish.

Making use of ALL the height for extra storage – Henton

Back in July 2017, we completed a commission for clients in Henton who wanted to utilise the available height in their house as much as possible. They don’t have a loft space as such, so we seamlessly built in units to look like a continuation of the wall that they were accommodated in. We had the metal bar and hooks fabricated, and then we designed and made an oak ladder for access to the top sections of storage. The oak ladder was given as stain and oil finish, and the storage units were painted in the same colour as the walls, which we had spectro-analysed. The units were constructed in moisture resistant MDF and maple, and the ladder was as mentioned, made from oak.

Repeat client wanted more storage as they do not have a loft space  all doors are on push catches so handless.
