Do you remember last year we posted that we had been lucky enough to be invited to a client’s woodland called Lambridge Wood to ‘cherry pick’ and take away some beautiful cherry wood – see that post here.

Well, towards the end of last year and after many months of drying later, we finished making some bespoke shelves from this beautiful cherry, and fitted them last year in our clients’ town house in Henley. We oiled the shelves for a resilient finish, and then installed them so they are hanging off the wall on big stainless steel and resin bolt fixings for strength. Our clients are Mr and Mrs Fortey, and Richard Fortey is a well-known author, television presenter and naturalist who has released a fascinating book about the life and natural processes of his wood, called ‘The Wood for the Trees’.

Sometimes our clients ask us to regenerate furniture that they already have. Maybe it’s perfectly good but outdated, and needs modernising, or rejigging to accommodate new appliances or a new style. We can do this for kitchens (see the kitchen we worked on here: Nettlebed kitchen overhaul), and we can also work to improve what other furniture there might already be in your home. Now, let’s be clear, we’re not talking about adding a lick of paint to a chair to ‘upcycle’ it, but designing and making new solutions for existing fitted wardrobes, storage areas and other living areas. This is the kind of work that we are happy to take on, workload and existing bookings permitting.

This is what we did in the photos above for a client in Thame. We were asked to fill an existing cupboard at one end of the dining room. We designed and made solid oak shelves and a cabinet below with three filling drawers, all in oak and then clear lacquered. We have since been back and completed similar work in the other cupboard to the left with more oak shelves that will function as a drinks cabinet.

Contact us if this is a solution you have possibly considered, but not sure where to start. Are you looking to commission similar bespoke furniture of any kind designing and making for your home? Earlier this year we were commissioned to design and make hallway furniture for our clients who own a wonderful Arts and Crafts house in Gerrards Cross. Our clients wanted a settle bench and a coat peg rail, and required both to fit in seamlessly their hallway with the rest of the style of the house. The peg rail is constructed in Ash with hand-turned pegs and then spray painted to expose the grain, matching with the old wire brushed and painted wood work in this room. The settle bench is made from English Oak and all the turning has been done by hand. The legs come up through the seat and are wedged with Walnut. The seat face has been dished out by hand to give comfort and aesthetics, and then the whole seat finished in a clear hard-wearing lacquer.

Our client who owns a house in Thame asked us to design and make a breakfast bar for his kitchen. We constructed this in solid English Oak, and we made it to fit neatly to the existing kitchen and hang off of the back of the granite work top of their peninsula area. The breakfast bar was completed with a hard-wearing lacquer finish to ensure many years of use.
